Job summary

The House of Commons Business Managers' Offices provide high calibre administrative support to the Government Whips, the Opposition Whips and to the Leader of the House of Commons.

Job description

The successful candidate will form part of the small, close-knit team known as the Government Whips' Admin Unit that provides high quality support to the team of 16 Government Whips in the performance of their Parliamentary duties. This is an exciting and integral role in a busy office working right at the heart of Parliament and how it interacts with Government.

The main objective of this busy and high-profile team is to facilitate many of the daily interactions between the Government and Opposition in Parliament, known as the 'Usual Channels', with the ultimate aim of easing the passage of the Government's legislative agenda. 

The responsibilities of the role can flex based on requirements, but the team's main shared duties include:

  • Providing high-calibre office support to the Government Whips.
  • Assisting the Government Whips with membership and attendance at meetings of Public Bill Committees and Delegated Legislation Committees.
  • Assisting with the coordination of the All Party Notices.
  • Managing the authorised absence system for Government backbenchers.
  • Analysing the results of Parliamentary votes.
  • Dealing with general enquiries from MPs, Parliamentary teams across Whitehall, House Authorities and the general public;
  • Other general administrative and ad hoc duties.

The post holder will report to the Head of Parliamentary Support.

There is an expectation that when the House of Commons is sitting, the post holder will work longer than normal hours, for which a private office allowance is payable. Annual leave is usually taken only during Parliamentary recesses.

The ideal candidate for this role is a proactive self-starter, capable of thinking ahead and using their initiative to solve problems before they arise. They would:

  • Be proactive and able to spot problems and suggest solutions.

  • Enjoy working as part of a small team.
  • Be able to quickly establish positive relationships, including with senior colleagues.

  • Have strong organisational skills with an eye for detail.

  • Be able to work at pace and under pressure where needed.

  • Have a keen interest in Parliamentary and/or current affairs.

Please note that this role requires SC clearance, which would normally need 5 years UK residency in the past 5 years.
