Job Description

We are recruiting a dynamic Grade C Policy Assistant for the Prime Minister’s Points of Light team, which sits in the Civil Society and Youth directorate in DCMS. In this stretching role you will help to deliver an ambitious No.10 project which is meeting DCMS’ objectives to enrich lives by recognising the value of volunteering and encouraging greater community participation.

This is an outward-looking role, engaging with members of the public, charity CEOs, MPs, and senior officials across Whitehall. Being a good written and verbal communicator who is excited by the thought of engaging with Points of Light’s huge and diverse variety of winners and stakeholders is essential.  

This role would suit candidates who have an interest in civil society or a background in the voluntary, community, charity and social enterprise sector who would like to join a fast-paced government team. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, with experience of presenting high-quality research, managing a varied workload and building excellent working relationships.

Job description

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting submissions and briefing for the Prime Minister
  • Undertaking research and analysis to find volunteers who are doing innovative and inspiring work across the UK
  • Engaging with new and existing award winners, and supporting stakeholder engagement across Government and with civil society
  • Identifying opportunities for award presentations with MPs and for media coverage
  • Providing administrative and operational support for the programme
  • Responding flexibly and at pace to competing and complex demands, and emerging priorities for Government

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience:

Essential Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with a variety of people, including senior Government officials and external stakeholders
  • Strong demonstration of good decision-making and ability to work at pace
  • Highly motivated self-starter with passion for research

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge and/or experience of the voluntary sector
