Job summary

The Business Group Strategy team was set up to respond to acute challenges which have a cross-cutting impact on UK industry. We support a diverse group of sector teams within the department, including steel, automotive, aerospace, hospitality, retail, construction, professional services,. We work closely with analytical colleagues to develop insights into critical policy issues. 

The team coordinates responses to cross-cutting issues which impact a range of sectors. Recent examples include overseeing DBTs management of climate change risks and developing policy recommendations to better manage multinational enterprises influence on UK policy. Our cross-cutting projects are often high profile and provide exposure to senior civil servants at the highest levels of Government, both in the UK and with colleagues across the globe. Other work includes monitoring and reporting on departmental priorities and representing the work of Business Group to central strategy teams. The role will be varied, and would suit a candidate with a proactive, solution driven mindset, and experience of working with evidence and data.

Job description

  • Supporting development of projects in policy areas which affect a broad range of businesses and sectors within the department. 
  • Building relationships across government, to support the team in responding to cross-cutting issues facing businesses. 
  • Fostering close relationships with analytical stakeholders on data-driven projects, to support the development of effective policy recommendations. 
  • Rapidly responding to fast moving commissions, such as providing inputs into briefings, ministerial speeches, policy development, and presentations. 
  • Monitoring and reporting activity for Business Group, including feeding into the departmental Outcome Delivery Plan, and supporting initiatives to develop the Groups ways of working, mission and vision. 
  • Managing relationships with sector teams, motivating them to deliver inputs, potentially at short notice.  
  • Working with evidence and data to develop policy insights, using programmes such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.

Skills and Experience

Essential Criteria 

  • Experience coordinating strategic projects.
  • Experience of using evidence to generate insights to shape senior decision making.
  • Experience delivering on competing priorities at pace.
  • Ability to work flexibly with others to the changing demands of the team.

Desirable Criteria 

  • Stakeholder management experience.
  • Experience of delivering analytical projects would be valuable. Examples could include developing dashboards or delivering quantitative or qualitative research projects for senior stakeholders.

Personal Attributes & Skills 

  • Ability to pick up new areas at pace, work creatively and constructively with others.  
  • Ability to build trusted and productive working relationships with colleagues across DBT and external stakeholders. 
  • Ability to prioritise and remain calm, working in a fast-paced operating environment with good organisational skills and management of competing priorities.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to communicate effectively with external stakeholders, senior civil servants and Ministers.

  • This role would suite colleagues with analytical experience looking to transition into strategy and policy roles.

Selection process details

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
