Job Description

We are looking for a highly-driven and data-confident analyst to work in this highly dynamic and interesting policy area, where you will be the lead analyst for the Tourism and Cultural Diplomacy team.

The Visitor Economy cuts across several departments across government and therefore you will play a pivotal role in co-ordinating the available data and evidence and lead in instigating a step-change in the timeliness and quality of statistics available to inform decision making. 

Meanwhile Cultural Diplomacy covers the UK’s cultural engagement abroad, e.g. through British Council, cultural exports, deployment of soft power. You will play an important role in furthering the evidence base in this area, leveraging insight and expertise from academic and research councils. 

Job description

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering bespoke sector analysis, economic appraisals and impact assessments to help policy leads make evidence-based decisions. 
  • Lead analyst working with the Tourism policy team on the short term lets consultation and co-ordinating visitor economy statistics across government
  • Monitoring and growing the evidence base on our sectors by analysing data and commissioning research, and feeding sector expertise through timely insight into policy development.
  • Ensuring ministers and department have optimal sector intelligence, data and forecasts to assess recovery of the tourism sector from the pandemic and supporting the successfully delivery of the Tourism Recovery Plan
  • Building strong analytical partnerships with our ALBs and external organisations, working together to leverage market intelligence and sector expertise, build capability, and lead in the sector.
  • Being a visible, effective leader in the analytical spoke, AHT, DCMS and the wider sector.

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience:

Essential Requirements:

  • Badged membership of the Government Economic Service, or eligibility to become a member. Full criteria can be found in the GES membership guidance.
    • Membership requires a minimum 2.1 honours degree in economics (or international equivalent), or a postgraduate degree in economics. If it is a joint degree, at least 50% of the course modules must be in economics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Extensive experience of using analysis to influence policy development.
  • Excellent quantitative analytical skills and a proven ability to identify and define core analytical questions, and devise the most appropriate approaches to address, within time and resource constraints.
  • A track record of delivering high quality and insightful analytical work to exacting deadlines.

Desirable Skills:

  • Proficiency with analytical tools such as R or Python for data analysis and visualisation.
  • Strong team leadership skills, including an ability to lead, develop and inspire teams to deliver analysis in complex policy areas.
  • A track record of building strong relationships with policy customers and external partners, to ensure analysis is trusted and used effectively.
